The Texas Organizing Project PAC (TOP PAC), a group that worked to help elect Kim Ogg as district attorney in Harris County and Joe Gonzalez as Democratic candidate for DA in Bexar County, today announced its endorsement of John Creuzot for Dallas County District Attorney in this November’s general election.
“We are part of a national social justice movement that is rooted in realizing racial and economic justice for communities of color, in part by reimagining our criminal justice system. We believe that Dallas County deserves a district attorney that shares our counties’ values of building solidarity across difference and an insatiable commitment to the pursuit of justice,” said Brianna Brown, Texas Organizing Project Deputy Director. “While our primary commitment will always be to organize around issues that deeply impact our communities, we know that elections matter. TOP PAC proudly endorses John Creuzot because he shares our commitment to the issues, real transformation, and gets that the status quo approach to criminal justice in Dallas County is not making us safer, is expensive, and destroys far too many Black and Latino families.
“TOP believes that the more than 2.6 million people who live in Dallas County deserve a district attorney that reflects our community values rooted in justice. The community needs a bold and knowledgeable leader at the helm to see much-needed reforms through, such as expanding the Conviction Integrity Unit, instituting new diversion programs, and not using money bail as a means of keeping in jail poor people who can’t afford to buy their freedom.
“An endorsement from TOP is not just a stamp of approval for a candidate. We work hard every election cycle to grow the electorate of color. This year, through our PAC, we’re going to make contact with hundreds of thousands of Dallas County voters at their doorsteps and over the phone to connect the issues they care about, including criminal justice reform, to the ballot box. We know that justice, in particular for communities color, is something that we have to demand, and be ready to fight for through active participation at the ballot box and in the streets.
“And after we help elect John Creuzot, we will continue working with him to enact the policies that deliver on the promised change.”
“Ending mass incarceration is the most important agenda in criminal justice reform,” said John Creuzot, candidate for Dallas County District Attorney. “Treating all residents with the dignity and respect they deserve, implementing bail bond reform, fully implementing cite and release, improving the Conviction Integrity Unit, treating low-level drug offenses as public health issues, improving services for the mentally ill and keeping them out of jail, and diverting low-level offenses that have no bearing on violent crime, are issues that the Texas Organizing Project and I agree should be the priorities of the next elected Dallas County District Attorney.
“I thank the Texas Organizing Project for their endorsement and look forward to working with them and other community partners to achieve real criminal justice reform in Dallas County.”
