The following is a statement by Jessica Azua, state immigration coordinator of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in reaction to yesterday’s massive ICE raid in Sumner, Texas:
“Our thoughts right now are with the 160 people who were separated from their families yesterday following an ICE raid at a manufacturing plant in Sumner. It is infuriating that these Texans have fallen victim to Trump’s summer of cruelty, which has seen his administration tear families apart at the border and throughout the country.
“This is what Trump wants, to detain and deport as many people of color, without regard to the damage done to families or communities. We will not be bowed by this administration’s dehumanizing attacks on immigrants. Fear and despair will not prevail; neither will this president’s politics of hate and division.
“TOP will coordinate in the coming days with local allies to ensure that all affected by this ICE raid receive the adequate legal aid and support they need and deserve. We want to help this shaken community recover from this tragedy and come out of it stronger than before.”
